Dear SI,
I am not a baseball fan to begin with, nor was I ever. In fact I hate baseball with a passion and have for quite some time. When I was little I would watch baseball with my dad, but it was too boring and I stopped. Now my favorite sport is football, which in my opinion is a better sport. But back to baseball, I hate it because it's so ridiculously over paid. If baseball players didn't make so much money those athletes would be participating in real sports. A couple of years ago the quarterback from Michigan left early to be a back up for the yankees, siging a deal worth about $17 million dollars if I remember correctly. The concept of a backup to be paid more than any player in the NFL is just stupid. And now with talks of a strike, fans say they won't come back. Well my question is, why should you come back even if they don't strike? None of the other leagues are striking, and they're making way less than baseball players. I don't even see how fans could be happy if there wasn't a strike. There's already been way too many problems and players whining about this and that, complaining that they have to be tested for illegal substances. If you make $30 million a year you piss in a stupid cup when they tell you to. But the thing that bothers me the most is that if they do settle and don't have a strike, are fans supposed to celebrate? Should I celebrate every day that football players don't strike? In fact football players, and even basketball players have more of a risk of personal injuries then baseball players. If you swing too hard and mess up your shoulder, or get hit in the face with the ball, you're too stupid to be making that much money. If anything, baseball players should have their salaries DEcreased and maybe just fire all of them. I'm sure you could find enough guys who would want to play, and they wouldn't need that much money. There's plenty of talented guys out there, and if they suck they can just take steroids. It worked for Marc McGwire.
Sincerely,
Charles Yudson
