Vintage Hating

Ok loyal supporters (haha).... but seriously folks. This shit cracked me up. I found an old email that I sent to Sports Illustrated on June 17, 2003. I was cleary not very well informed as a highschool junior. Regardless, this is classic hating. Enjoy. (I have no pictures of me from that time period, so I dug a little further).

Dear SI,

I am not a baseball fan to begin with, nor was I ever. In fact I hate baseball with a passion and have for quite some time. When I was little I would watch baseball with my dad, but it was too boring and I stopped. Now my favorite sport is football, which in my opinion is a better sport. But back to baseball, I hate it because it's so ridiculously over paid. If baseball players didn't make so much money those athletes would be participating in real sports. A couple of years ago the quarterback from Michigan left early to be a back up for the yankees, siging a deal worth about $17 million dollars if I remember correctly. The concept of a backup to be paid more than any player in the NFL is just stupid. And now with talks of a strike, fans say they won't come back. Well my question is, why should you come back even if they don't strike? None of the other leagues are striking, and they're making way less than baseball players. I don't even see how fans could be happy if there wasn't a strike. There's already been way too many problems and players whining about this and that, complaining that they have to be tested for illegal substances. If you make $30 million a year you piss in a stupid cup when they tell you to. But the thing that bothers me the most is that if they do settle and don't have a strike, are fans supposed to celebrate? Should I celebrate every day that football players don't strike? In fact football players, and even basketball players have more of a risk of personal injuries then baseball players. If you swing too hard and mess up your shoulder, or get hit in the face with the ball, you're too stupid to be making that much money. If anything, baseball players should have their salaries DEcreased and maybe just fire all of them. I'm sure you could find enough guys who would want to play, and they wouldn't need that much money. There's plenty of talented guys out there, and if they suck they can just take steroids. It worked for Marc McGwire.

Sincerely,

Charles Yudson

June

Play this: (I can't simply put youtube videos into my blog, so you'll have to bear with me and designate another window for your soundtrack.)

I wasn't planning on writing another post today. But sometimes music just hits you, and I had to say something about it, so thank god I have a blog. (also, "thank god for 9th.") Sometimes you're just jamming out, and you realize, I fucking love music. "Kick off my shoes relax and play/and spin it for the whole joint/ cus I like to get the whole point/ music is everything to me..."

As dope as LB is, I digress. That was not the song that hit me today, although it did pop into my head when I was thinking about what to write. Just saying thank god triggered the memory of that lyric. I know you guys do that shit too. You just hear a phrase, a sentence, a word, and you immediately hear a song in your head. I am distracted yet again, back to my point.

I've always been a fan of different types of hip hop, there's an incredible range. Some hip hop is all about having fun ("and you can tell by how her titties hung"). Some hip hop is more serious. I've always loved music that speaks from the heart. It's great to see someone turn their problems and pain into something beautiful. A lot of art can do that, but hip hop hits home the most for me. Everything El-p does pretty much, especially step father factory. Odd jobs the shopkeeper's wife is a pretty heavy album, especially transparent. Sims, lights out paris... that album is great.

What hit me this time, is one song, by one artist. A notoriously vulgar battle rapper with some great punchlines. He describes his style as being "like a pussy with AIDS/ you don't wanna fuck with it." "Non believers who can't accept we're the hottest/ sleep on us/ and wake up in flame broiled pajamas." Funny, but certainly not profound.

When a guy like that comes out and drops a song from the heart, it really blows me away. Just two verses at the end of RJD2's album. If you don't know it, you should. Even if you do, enjoy it again:

Why it sucks to be a fan of DC sports

Let me preface this by saying that I support all DC sports teams. I have a lot of respect for all of the athletes out there, and their abilities to play each and every one of these sports at a professional level. That being said, I hate being a DC sports fan. I also find some of your sports boring. Sorry.

The Nationals: Yeah let's get a DC baseball team! "Ok let's build a stadium in your neighborhood." BOO fuck you! While I'm glad that DC got a baseball team, they are just not very good. Luckily, I don't care about baseball. I'll watch highlights on sportscenter, and I've watched pieces of games here and there, but uh, it's just not my thing. Sorry baseball. PS, learn to spell.

DC United: I think they're good? But then they shit the bed in the playoffs? I really don't follow them that closely, because I'm not that interested in soccer. They are though, probably the best team in DC. Also, their jerseys are ill. I can't hate on them, they are usually pretty good. I've been known to watch a soccer game here and there, and for those of you that do like soccer, enjoy.

Washington Freedom: Surprsingly, this team was named pre 9/11. (come on that's not offensive, we named a lot of stupid shit freedom and you know it. I'm still pissed we had to change the name of the bullets, but that's another issue entirely.) We got Mia Hamm, and ended up winning the championship in the first couple years. Then the league folded. I've been informed that it exists again. That doesn't mean that I intend to watch it. Sorry ladies.

The Caps: Ovechkin is nasty. The rookie goalie looked good in the playoffs. I'm happy for the success, but it's still hockey. I couldn't watch a game all the way through. Expect me to hype them up when they win the cup in the next couple of years.

The Mystics: I watch women's basketball on a semi regular basis. The Mystics were tight when we had Holdsclaw and Stacey Dales. Stacey, I'm also in love with you. That being said, it's not quite as exciting when only 2 people in the entire league can dunk.

Washington Wizards: Where to begin. I used to watch the wizards when they were just awful. Then we brought in Jordan, and he drafted Kwame. I read in the post that he wanted Pao Gasol, but was afraid taking a soft foreigner over a hard nosed inner city kid would look bad. Way to stick to your guns there. He may not have been #1 overall talented, but he's really not that bad. He did have the game winning block for the Pistons this year against our Washington Wizards. I'd rather have him then Pecherov. But we did trade him to the Lakers for Caron, so you know what? He served his purpose. Remember the other russian guy we drafted that same year as Pech? Me neither. We were so bad this year we couldn't even win the draft lottery.

I won't really mention the years Jordan played for us, and I think he'll thank me for that. He was good, he just wasn't MJ. Rip Hamilton for Jerry Stack. That worked well. He got shipped to Dallas for Antawn, so it all works out in the end. Next topic, Juan Carlos Navarro. "Yeah, he's going to stay in Spain for a couple years." Oh ok, good thing we drafted him NOW. He is a baller, and I'm pissed we let him go this year. But hey, we're set at the point guard position right? Oh is that a low blow? Well low blows happen, and then your star player misses 3 years.Look, I love Gilbert. He is a tremendous player, he is an interesting and quirky person. He gives to charity. When he is healthy, he is an unstoppable scorer. He is just not a traditional point guard. Is he capable of getting 10 assists a game? Yes. Does he do it every night? No. There are very few pure point guards in the game right now, and I think that having a set up man could really help us and Gilbert. Also, I can't justify giving such a big contract to someone who is on the IR. I really hope that he gets healthy. I also hope that he passes the ball more (some of his teammates are actually good!).

Deshawn Stevenson: Don't poke the bear.

Overall, the Wizards do have a talented roster. I like a lot of the young players, like Dom Mcguire and big Javale Mcgee. Brendan Haywood is one of the most underrated big men in the league. Caron and Antawn are men. They hold it down even in the shitty years. I love those guys. It's just really difficult as a fan to write off an entire season because one guy is hurt. I know he wants to be in good health more than I want that, and I can't hold it against him. But in this fickle world of professional sports, you only get so many chances. I really hope he can do what Grant Hill did and stay healthy.

The Washington Redskins: Ok, so up to this point, I've pretty much been whining like a bitch. For the most part the DC teams are no worse than many other cities. But you know what, this is my blog. So either read it, or don't. I don't care. At least DC has major sports teams. Sometimes, they even win a few games. My beef with the Redskins is deeper than that.

Having Dan Snyder as an owner is incredibly frustrating. His heart is in the right place, but he makes some awful decisions. He tries to dip his hand into decisions that really shouldn't be his to make. If you look at some of the best franchises in the league, you see stability. You see established coaches, teams building through the draft. The Steelers, the Patriots, the Giants, they do things the right way. Now I know it's hard to find a good coach, and drafting isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, but we do both of those worse than anybody.

As a country, we seem to think that the more expensive something is, the better it is. We took that approach for coaches and players too. Over the years we've had Norv, Marty, Ray Rhodes, Terry Robiskie, Marvin Lewis, Al Saunders, Greg Williams. We even lured Joe Gibbs out of retirement. If he can't save us, who can? Everyone expected us to hand the team over to one of the 2 assistand head coaches after Joe retired, but we didn't. I like Jim Zorn, and I hope we give him a long enough tenure to really evaluate him. But I was mad as hell that we didn't make Greg Williams our head coach. We started out going after old guys like Bruce Smith, Jeff George, Primetime, Dana Stubblefield. We even got to the playoffs. Then there was a cold front, and everyone's plastic hips cracked and had to be replaced. We tried buying big names in free agency with Trotter, Armstead and Arrington. We tried getting up and coming guys with Coles, Morton, and Hall. We spend more money in free agency than almost anyone else. Who do people think is going to sign Vick? The Redskins. Snyder doesn't care about paying over the salary cap, and for that I guess I am grateful. But the thing is, you can't just throw money at a problem. We have had less draft picks over the last couple years than anyone I can think of. In the NBA you can put together veterans with that "win now" mentality and do pretty well (cough boston celtics cough). Sorry Dan, no instant gratification here. In the NFL the rosters are so big, you need DEPTH. It's hard to do that with 2 picks on the entire first day of the draft. We'll probably lose more picks over this Haynesworth crap.

I think (no, I hope) the Redskins are on the right path now, we had relatively little turnover in our roster this offseason. Despite the whole Jay Cutler fiasco we are giving our promising young quarterback a chance to prove himself. We strategically spent big money as opposed to the usual mess. Dan wants to win, and he's trying to adapt to the NFL.

Whatever happens, unless the Redskins and Wizards both come home with trophies, I'm probably going to cry like a little schoolgirl. I love sports- playing them, watching them, arguing about them. But the nature of the beast is that you can't win all the time, unless you're Red Auerbach. And let's be honest, I've never won much of anything as an athlete either. But the longer I bitch and moan, the better it's going to feel when we finally do win something. If you're not crushed by every 19 win season the Wizards have, then you don't deserve to be happy when they do win. So I'm going to keep complaining, and you don't have to listen to me.

confessions of a recovering hater

"If I don't like it I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm hatin"

For those of you who have known me for long enough, you could describe me as a hater. In the past I made such a fierce effort to be independent that I would simply hate on stuff just because other people liked it. On the bright side, I found a lot of great music and movies that I would have not otherwise heard or seen. On the down side, I was being a douche. There are plenty of good things out there that I refused to check out. Why? Because I was a hater. In my attempted growth as a person, I've tried to stop hating on things for no good reason.

Some things that I have stopped hating on:

- Harry Potter: I thought they were kind of dorky. I forgot that I am kind of dorky. 9 years later, yeah, they're entertaining books.

- Transformers the Movie: Not the cartoon, that has always been the shit. The live action one. It's a fun movie, although I'm still not too happy about the way the robots look. But if it's on TV, I'll watch it. And I'm sure as hell going to see the new one.

-Kobe: He's got great D, and his offensive skillset is the deepest, most diverse, and most fun to watch. Is he arrogant? Yes. Did that chick ask for it? Yes.

-Lebron: I may hate him, but I can't hate ON him. He is the shaq of guards. He's changing the game. You can not stop him. He scores, he gets assists, boards, and plays D(that's a recent development). However, as a Wizards fan, I can never, ever forgive him for the shit he said to Gilbert, or for the game winning travels. I'm glad that Wizards/Cavs has become a rivarly, because I want to see that over the years. Oh yeah, and uh, crab dribble. That is all.

-Crocs: They're really comfortable, and they are impervious to bad smells. I only wear them for ultimate.

-Kanye West: This one is hard. Lyrically, there's a thousand guys I'd rather listen to. But he's not bad. His beats are dope. And when you look at him in comparison to all the other hip hop on the radio... well ok I see why people sweat him. I don't listen to his shit that much, but I respect him.

-Blogging: kind of self explanatory.

Something that everyone else hated on, EXCEPT ME, now I kind of hate on it now that everyone else likes it:

- Family Guy: I loved this show when it was originally on, and was upset when it was cancelled. I bought it on DVD when it came out, and was excited when they brought it back. Now I don't really watch it that much, it's just not as good as the old episodes. It's still funny though.

Some things I'm trying to stop hating on:

-Jay-z: This is originally from that "other people like him" type of hating. I have been scrutinzed for this more than any other hatage. Like Kanye I said "there are dudes out there just as tight." His verse on "I just died" about dumbing down his lyrics to sell records... well that about did it for me. Pretty much the definition of selling out. Now (deep breath) I'm trying to get over that and appreciate his music for what it is. So I will plunge myself into his discography.

-Jimmy Falon: He's not Conan. He's just not. I wasn't a huge fan of him on SNL or weekend update. But I hear he's funny, and he's got the roots. THE FUCKING ROOTS.

Well that about does it for now. I'm sure there's other stuff I hate on, and my friends are sure to remind me.
